In this week, we know about how important for new technology in multimedia industry ——mobile phone (VJ and mojo). Both are very useful and important for journalist and citizen journalism.
It can be demonstrated by most journalists that carrying mobile phone in their pocket or handbag as an important tool for their reporting. It is rare to find out a person who does not have a mobile phone.
A slogan of “we are all online journalism now” was shown that new media tools and high technology give people more opportunities to participate into media field, such as VJ and mojo.
Meanwhile, audience interaction was the main source and a wide range in the quality and style of their online media content.
In addition, from the reading for week 9, I understand, how important or how powerful of mobile journalist (mojo) and video journalist (VJ) in multi— journalism industry. It is really difficult to find a journalist who does not have mobile phone during their work. Taking an example of Qik and Iphone these new tools are changing the way of journalists.
Also, as the reading analyzed the mobile phone for newsgathering in Asia was so popular. For example, China was the mainly contributor to the growth. Nearly two in every three have a mobile phone.
In my opinion, the picture from mobile phone may look very ordinary, but it is only the beginning of a major new way of reporting. Along with a convergence of cheap technology and fast broadband and wireless networks citizen participant will become more and more important.
Presently, audiences are the main source of the new websites and some of the newspaper or the magazines. The mobile phone regarded as a good tool the send news to the news agencies.
The STOMP in Singapore and the Inquirer.net in Philippines have achieved it. Audiences who at scene, and use their mobile phones and shot the pictures of the news evens, then send them to the STOMP or the Inquirer.net, the editors will select the good quality photos and text to publish on the webpage.
These two news websites share their content with papers. Some of the breaking news that the professional journalist can’ catch, have been published on the newspapers, the news were catch by the audiences. Actually, audiences are more help to catch the breaking news. Because there always will be the audiences in the scene of news evens, the mobile phones are equip digital lens and the text writer, these tool can help audiences get the fresh information of the news evens. they would like to send the fresh news in text and pictures to the news agencies.
The new structure—mobile phones plus high technology news agency is the news reporting styles in the new centaury.
News broadcasting has come a long way since 1909 when stories are handwritten and breaking news sent through telegraphs only. Even 1979, reporters still rely largely on manual typewriters and landline telephones to report news back to head office.
Now in 2009, with the mobile phone widely used by almost everybody, and the development of online tools, such as RSS, Skype, Google, Wiki, Facebook, Delicious, etc, news can be spread almost the moment it happens, with citizens participating in broadcasting with their phone cameras. Forms of ‘now’ media are made possible by ‘moblog’, ‘podcasting’, ‘videoblog’, etc. In 2014, more amazing technologies are predicted and just beyond the horizon.
According to recent researches, a quarter of Australian population watch online video two or more hours a day. Mobile phone has moved beyond for just talking purpose. A large percentage of mobile phone users have taken photos or access Facebook with their phones. People can now share contents and photos via msn or Bluetooth.
As members of the younger generation, we cannot welcome more or live without these technologies now. These tools are also greatly beneficial to the journalism industry breaking news, updating news as they occur. All this shortens the distance between countries and make it feel a small world.

Like in any business it is imperative to stay organised and up to date with all information that may be relevant to your business. 50 years ago journalism though still as cut throat, required far less portals for publication. A reporter gathered information on a story; it was taken back to the editor and printed for publication as soon as possible. Nowadays there are countless news gathering tools, innumerous mediums for sharing gathered information and many online tools for preparing slideshows, editing pictures and video clips. News gathering and reporting is no longer a job for a select few, it not only involves the journalist, reporter, editor and sub editor, it is a team effort that often requires the assistance of the very people the news is created for.
When reporting on major news stories such as the “Black Saturday Bush Fires” the assistance, cooperation and knowledge of many is required to report accurately, visually and impressively. For example, when the bush fires were raging, people were asked to send in photographs of hope and tragedy. Such photographs, would not have been able to be obtain from just anyone, they came from people who had experienced the tragedy first hand. Youtube sites then appeared showing footage of the blaze, and impassioned and poignant photo slides immerged. Without the knowledge of sites such as soundslides and various blog sites the tragedy would have never gained the respect and knowledge that it deserved. These news gathering tools work hand in hand with conventional methods of reporting and allow for 24 hour, wide spread coverage of information broadcasting. To survive today, news companies must have a firm grasp of all the immerging and converging newsgathering technologies.
Before the lecture of week 5 I have no idea about what is “OhmyNews”, after researching it totally inspired me to be a citizen reporter in the future.
According to my research and lecture, we can see that OhmyNews’s influence had steadily grown from 2002 to 2004 and the website goes globally during 2005.
“OhmyNews” was based on the premise of “citizen reporters”. The main theme of “OhmyNews” was “every citizen is a reporter”. You can report news that happened around you just you like or interested. Moreover, people can share their information and views in their global community.
Here, I want to know why “Ohmynews” was so successful? What kind of feature does Ohmynews owned? Why people write for Ohmynews? And what meaning is “every citizen is reporter”?
Firstly, new media technology was popular and widely used by most people. For example, nearly 65% of Koreans are regular Internet users and a large number of people use the Internet as the primary source of information. In addition, it is the highest broadband penetration in the world, 25%of Koreans using broadband internet (Joyce, 2007). Further, as I know about Korean media industry, they are really good at product soap opera and entertainment program. However, now “OhmyNews” goes globally, they launched English edition during 2004 and the underling global newspaper had owned by the New York Times. Lastly, OhmyNews fully used audience as a main information source to build their media industry empire.
Take a successful example of “OhmyNews” in Korean, there was a raised issue that worthes to be a discussion of the phenomenon of citizen journalism and the role of audience towards to media democracy.
As the tutor mentioned in the lecture, today, media market has changed much more than around decade before. The tender of the media agency is gathering the sounds, visions, and pictures as a whole. Makes the accepters getting the information as easy as possible. As I was a child, adults catch the new by using some traditional media forms, such as TV, radio and newspaper. Mostly, people subscribed the newspapers every year, cause, there were no any newspapers run the online editions, but now we can see that almost every newspaper got e-newspaper in their official website, and there is lots of software gathers the main newspapers, and what you need to do is just install the software and choose the e-newspapers in the list, and it will updates the newspapers everyday.
As it can be shown from the example research, interactive media has been increasingly prevalent in 21st century. The inundate development of Internet is the most obvious evident. As far as I am concerned, the audiences were attracted and influenced more by the key-word “interactive”, which means there is something connecting between audiences and things they are fascinated about.
What’s worth mentioning is that print media is no longer that print product. Along with the cooperation between print media and interactive media, the troops of e-readers are getting bigger and bigger. In terms of advertisement, which plays a much more important role in magazines, the value of business operation is coming out visibly. There is no doubt that media need to be with business. Distribution of newspapers and magazines is changing with areas and local financial circumstance.
People with talents of language and multimedia are pinup. That is why most of staff are editors, the center power of newsroom, where make news different.
Journalism has established many new forms of broadcasting with speed, images and multi-layer presentations. Nowadays blogs, Wikis, Moblog, Vblog are widely used to spread news at the fastest speed to the largest audiences whenever something major happened in the world. Take the example of sudden death of Micheal Jackson, this breaking news was conveyed to the whole world together with the image of him being carried into the ambulance, was taken from a mobile phone and used in the front of many newspaper and websites.
Another newly adapted form used in journalism is Soundslide. It is a combination of images, audio track and text mostly used on websites. Slides can be selected randomly and moved to any positions. These developments of new technologies in journalism create new challenges for new ages journalists. They are now demanded to master all these news skills and to produce news in the fastest manner using whatever means available and accessible. Journalists sometimes have to play different roles such as writer, cameraman and sound technician. The demand for speed causes fierce competition to be the first one to break major news. Sometimes the quality of news articles suffers as a result of pressure and the rush.

It is not enough for news to simply be presented in the form of print. For news papers to keep up with the publics’ growing demand for news as it happens, newspapers must transform themselves into news organisations and employ the use of news gathering and reporting tactics that allow almost instaneous transmission of information.
Journalists can no longer get by with the ability to write a compelling article, they must embody the role of photographer, reporter, camera operator, editor and journalist if they are to keep up with the converging forms of news reporting. With the convergence of many different technologies and information portals, consumers are able to access information in accordance with their lifestyle choices. Research shows US audiences averaging 10 hours a day with media.
The downside to this almost instantaneous ability to intercept information, is that the quality of the information is not always sterling. An online reporter for the Daily Telegraph released an article discussing the winner of Master Chef 30 minutes before the shows’ verdict was actually given. The journalist wanting to be the first to report on the winner, substituted the integrity of the newspaper in assuming who the winning contestant would be. Convergence does however satisfy consumer demands, we must simply learn to evolve as it does.
