It is not enough for news to simply be presented in the form of print. For news papers to keep up with the publics’ growing demand for news as it happens, newspapers must transform themselves into news organisations and employ the use of news gathering and reporting tactics that allow almost instaneous transmission of information.
Journalists can no longer get by with the ability to write a compelling article, they must embody the role of photographer, reporter, camera operator, editor and journalist if they are to keep up with the converging forms of news reporting. With the convergence of many different technologies and information portals, consumers are able to access information in accordance with their lifestyle choices. Research shows US audiences averaging 10 hours a day with media.
The downside to this almost instantaneous ability to intercept information, is that the quality of the information is not always sterling. An online reporter for the Daily Telegraph released an article discussing the winner of Master Chef 30 minutes before the shows’ verdict was actually given. The journalist wanting to be the first to report on the winner, substituted the integrity of the newspaper in assuming who the winning contestant would be. Convergence does however satisfy consumer demands, we must simply learn to evolve as it does.
